a young ballerina looks sad

It’s pretty discouraging to hear how the federal government is considering de-funding the National Endowment for the Arts, especially considering it’s a drop in the well compared to other programs (military) in the federal budget. Many smaller arts organizations rely on that money to function.

I found out recently that the Long Island Philharmonic, an organization I worked at for 4 years, is now defunct. Harry Chapin was one of the founding members of that orchestra. The truth is, many not-for-profit music ensembles don’t make enough money through ticket sales. They rely on their board members to bring in money, and other charitable gifts to finance their operation.

I think most of us would agree that having art in our lives makes them better, but not everyone has extra cash to share these days. However, if we really wanted to, we could find the means to support these organizations…but we have to know about them first! Also, money isn’t the only way to help these groups.

Through proper marketing and education, and being smart with budgets these organizations could thrive, or at least survive. We could continue to enjoy their talents and artistry.
